The most important town in the Casentino, Bibbiena, grew on the roots of the Etruscan center of Vipena. The heart of the old town (a short drive uphill from the far less attractive new town below) is marked by the Renaissance Chiesa di San Lorenzo, which took its present form (apart from the cloister, added in the first half of the 17th century) when it was enlarged to house Franciscan friars in the 15th century. It is best known for its two noteworthy della Robbia terracottas – a Nativity by Andrea della Robbia on the right, and a Deposition opposite. The Romanesque Pieve di Santi Ippolito e Donato contains the town’s most important work: a triptych Maestà by Bicci di Lorenzo.
